The Role of Acupuncture in Migraine Treatment
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Tahir Gökdemir · 16 July 2026 · 3 min read
Migraine is one of the neurological diseases that most affects quality of life. In addition to medication treatments, acupuncture is a complementary option that is also included in international guidelines.
What does the scientific evidence say?
Large-scale studies show that regular acupuncture sessions can reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. The World Health Organization lists headache among the indications for which acupuncture can be applied.
The treatment process
Acupuncture treatment is usually planned as weekly sessions; courses of 8-12 sessions are applied depending on the patient's attack frequency and general condition. Performed with fine, sterile, single-use needles, the procedure is painless for most patients.
Which approach is appropriate for your migraine complaint is decided together after a neurological evaluation and examination.
